SAO PAULO, BRAZIL — The 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix was a chaotic, rain soaked thriller that saw Max Verstappen claim a remarkable victory after starting from P17. The Dutchman showcased his skill and resilience, navigating through changing weather conditions and multiple incidents to secure his 8th victory of the season and his first win since June.
The race began with drama as Lance Stroll spun off during the formation lap, leading to an aborted start. Once the race got underway, George Russell took the lead from pole-sitter Lando Norris. As the rain intensified, a series of strategic pit stops and safety car periods shuffled the order. A red flag on Lap 32, following Franco Colapinto’s crash, added to the chaos.
When the race resumed, Esteban Ocon led briefly before Verstappen surged ahead. Verstappen’s pace was unmatched, and he crossed the finish line with a 19.477-second lead. Alpine had a dream day, with Ocon and Pierre Gasly securing second and third, respectively, marking a double podium for the team.
Russell finished fourth, followed by Charles Leclerc in fifth and Norris in sixth. Despite a 10-second penalty, Oscar Piastri managed to finish eighth. The race highlighted the unpredictable nature of Formula 1 in 2024, with Verstappen’s stunning recovery and Alpine’s unexpected success being the standout stories.
