ZANDVOORT, NETHERLANDS — Oscar Piastri won from pole position, leading all 72 laps on the famed Circuit Zandvoort. McLaren teammate Lando Norris suffered mechanical issues at Lap 65, retiring the car from 2nd place to a final finishing position of 18th and zero points. Defending F1 Champion Max Verstappen finished 2nd to the joy of the Dutch fans, with Isack Hadjar scoring his first F1 podium in 3rd.
On lap 24, 7x World Champion Lewis Hamilton’s difficult first season at Ferrari added another challenge when he crashed at Turn 3, ending his race early for another DNF.
Oscar Piastri heads the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, the next race on the F1 calendar (September 7, 2025), with a 34-point lead.

The 2025 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort was unusually spicy with overtakes, crashes, and safety cars. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri delivered a masterclass to claim victory while teammate Lando Norris suffered a gut-wrenching retirement, reshaping the Formula 1 title fight. This race, a tale of triumph and tragedy, underscored McLaren’s dominance and the fine margins defining the championship.
Piastri, starting from pole, led every lap, fending off challenges through three safety car periods triggered by crashes from Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton (Lap 23) and Charles Leclerc (Lap 53), plus Norris’ late exit. His flawless performance secured his seventh win of 2025, extending his championship lead to 34 points. Max Verstappen, the home hero, capitalized on Norris’ misfortune to take second for Red Bull, while Racing Bulls’ rookie Isack Hadjar claimed a stunning maiden podium in third, a breakout moment for the 20-year-old Frenchman. George Russell (Mercedes) and Alex Albon (Williams) rounded out the top five, with Haas’ Ollie Bearman impressing in sixth from a pit-lane start. Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) took seventh and eighth, followed by Yuki Tsunoda (Red Bull) and Esteban Ocon (Haas) in the points.
Strategy was pivotal at Zandvoort, where overtaking is notoriously tough. McLaren’s double-stack pit stops under the first safety car kept Piastri and Norris ahead, with both switching to hard tires for the final stint. Verstappen’s early gamble on soft tires gave him a bold Lap 1 pass on Norris but faded later due to tire wear, costing him a shot at Piastri. Hadjar’s harder tire compound allowed him to hold fourth before Norris’ retirement gifted him third. Meanwhile, Albon’s aggressive first lap and Williams’ one-stop strategy turned 15th on the grid into a top-five finish. Ferrari’s day was dismal, with Hamilton’s crash and Leclerc’s collision with Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) ending their races early.
Norris’ Lap 65 retirement, caused by a suspected oil leak, was a crushing blow. Trailing Piastri by just 1.2 seconds, he was poised for a 1–2 McLaren finish until smoke poured from his MCL39. “It hurts,” Norris told Sky Sports, but vowed to fight on with nine races left. Piastri, calm as ever, called it “unfortunate” but emphasized his control, marking his ninth career win. McLaren’s Andrea Stella lamented the lost 1–2 but praised Piastri’s “champion-like” drive.
As F1 heads to Monza, Piastri’s consistency and McLaren’s pace make him the man to beat. Norris, now under pressure, must find magic to close the gap.
